This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like typical body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the big city to the country for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that arise in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
