As confusing as it is to watch the chief executive attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into a symbol of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred more gradually, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains unsettling via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Jesus that I grew up with, since in theory Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and since the rapidly expanding group within America could have minimal awareness of him because they identify as skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value within Christian narrative.

The baby grows up in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his message concerns compassion for others, particularly for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a method to educate the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when someone steals your jacket you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.
The apparent and straightforward fact that the Savior in biblical accounts requests a kind of profound affection concentrated on the needy has perpetually caused Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Best Within Us
Hence I have become heartened to observe the persistent defiance against Trump arise in this past year. It has served as substantial consolation to help build the campaign that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged voters to turn out in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags at every demonstration and appeals to the finest aspects in US history.
