The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second release put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
