The beloved crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.
An upcoming six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."
The last series concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came this week.
The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.
Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, plot details hinted.
In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had countless followers track the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."
He added: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."
"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."
The drama premiered in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.
The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.
The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.
However, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
