Right-leaning responses to the partial release of documents related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how extensive redactions portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise significant questions about what may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for increased transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Release
However, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But a few are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader discourse on the right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy binders of files that contained little previously unseen information.
