A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
