Government Appeals to High Court Following Failed Bid to Halt Food Stamp Payment Order

On Friday, just moments following a federal appeals court determined that the administration must completely finance food stamp benefits, the federal government sought intervention from the supreme court in a new effort to block the order.

A short time later, the highest court issued an emergency order temporarily blocking entire nutrition assistance funds, which approximately 42 million Americans rely on to buy groceries.

Administration officials had requested the federal appeals court to overturn a court ruling that it issue the upcoming complete food stamp assistance during a US federal government shutdown, and faced refusal that afternoon.
