Fiona Shaw Discusses Her Professional Journey: From Andor to Harry Potter

In a recent interview, esteemed performer Fiona Shaw shared insights about her diverse career spanning many years and memorable characters.

Andor's Powerful Speech

When discussing her unforgettable eulogy scene in the Star Wars series Andor, Shaw revealed that the original script contained more explicit wording. "I did say a distinct term in my speech," she clarified, "while the screenwriter hoped that Disney would approve it."

The actress described the unique filming conditions for that particular scene. "When I performed that speech, I was recorded with about 200 cameras to create a hologram. I was completely alone in a massive studio, with no director or production team there with me."

Classic Literature Projects

Speaking about the forthcoming adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, Shaw shared enthusiasm about the completed filming. "We recently completed shooting it," she stated, "though performers typically doesn't see is the final film."

She praised filmmaker Georgia Oakley as "truly wonderful and quite confident." The production took place in stunning houses throughout Britain, including sites within Dorset, Knebworth, and Devonshire.

The actress also recalled on her earlier performance in the nineties version of Persuasion, portraying Mrs. Croft. "The director had specific requirements: no wigs and just candle illumination," she remembered. "He truly aimed to capture the experience of early 19th century life."

Harry Potter Memories

When asked about her time in the wizarding film series, Shaw talked warmly about collaborating with her departed co-star. "He represented the most refined, creative and talented man," she revealed. "He had the most mellifluous handwriting and once sent me a note inviting me to lunch in elaborate gothic lettering."

The actress portrayed Griffiths as constantly speaking and telling interesting stories with herself and the child performers on set. "He possessed fantastic general knowledge so we would listen captivated to his stories."

Theatrical Work

Talking about her New York stage role in Medea, Shaw recalled how emotionally demanding the show was. "I met one of the chorus members three years later, who said: 'I'm not over it yet,'" she shared.

The production had an extensive run, starting in Dublin, then traveling to England, followed by the American capital, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and ultimately Manhattan. "We grew quite bonded as a company," she noted.

Performance Philosophy

Regarding inquiries concerning her ability to transition between comedy and drama, Shaw explained that "comedy connects us as it's about rupturing the norm." However, she admitted that "prior to a comedy, I always sleep poorly, because you have to catch the wave on the day."

Regarding her technique for tackling various roles, Shaw commented: "I discover each one challenging. But even if the person you're playing is rather different from you, there is often something about them that you identify with."

Recent Work

Discussing her recent performance in the production Hot Milk, Shaw characterized her character Rose as "a terrible woman though you cannot perform anything from that perspective." The actress elaborated that Rose suffers from a functional neurological disorder that causes mobility issues.

"The character doesn't realize of the effect she creates on her daughter," Shaw observed. "All she knows is that she wants to improve. She's well-intentioned yet unaware. Perhaps that's what most of us are."

Self-Perception

Upon hearing that viewers consider her perfect for gang boss roles, Shaw answered with humor: "Oh dear! I'm so not scary. But perhaps when filled with intention, my features can appear threatening."

She added: "In reality sometimes quite scatty so perhaps it's therapeutic for me to play very intelligent, methodical personalities. I try to depict fascinating individuals so I avoid criticizing them. Don't be scared – approach and greet me!"

Passion for Words

Talking about her renowned performance of the poetic work The Waste Land, Shaw conveyed her profound relationship with words and verse. "I'm consistently devoted in the language," she declared, "since the indicators to everything are contained within the selection of vocabulary."

The actress thinks that "verse constitutes the refined version of language, or the moment that has been captured." When people boil down to what they truly want to say, it's frequently lyrical."

Audiobook Work

Regarding her acclaimed audiobook performances, specifically Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Shaw shared that "I enjoyed recording Alice in Wonderland because I incorporated all my acquaintances into it – personal companions and fellow performers."

The actress explained how she performed the caterpillar as channeling Alan Rickman, and characterized the Red Queen evoking Geraldine McEwan. "It consistently feels a privilege to record and perform literature," she concluded, "though it requires extended periods of work."

Working with Terrence Malick

Remembering her time working with celebrated filmmaker Terrence Malick on Tree of Life, Shaw described him as distinctive. "All that the director says and does is unique," she observed.

She shared a specific recollection of their first meeting: "He left a message on my answering machine which said, 'I wonder, would you assist me with my film?' We went out for breakfast. He said, 'Well, what are you going to have?' I said, 'I'm going to have scrambled eggs.' He said, 'I think I'll have scrambled eggs too,' like it was the most exotic choice in the world."

The actress also described Malick's distinctive method of asking actors "Do you want to do this scene indoors or outdoors?" – questions rarely posed by different directors. "He exclusively used natural light," she added, "meaning actors could perform interior near glass or outside on the street."

Regarding the lengthy post-production, Shaw disclosed that "He takes approximately three years to complete the movie. I had been told by the producer following twenty-four months that I was likely among the primary roles, but by the time the film came out, I was nearly gone."

She concluded by characterizing Malick's unique process: "He builds this enormous structure, and he takes away many components. He essentially deconstructs films."
