Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "with execution" following their publication of a controversial video.
The video footage, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic congress members who in the past acted in armed forces or intelligence capacities.
"Similar to us, you all swore an vow to safeguard and uphold this founding document," the lawmakers stated in the short video. "And right now, the risks to our governing document aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can reject unlawful commands, you must refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out directives that violate the statutes or our national charter."
The clip reportedly prompt a angry reaction from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he declared: "This represents really bad, and Dangerous to our United States. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats issued a combined declaration censuring the statements.
"Violent politics has no position in the United States," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all worked our United States with exceptional loyalty and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's appalling and harmful death threats against elected officials, and urge GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in communication with protective services "to ensure the security of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these unhinged digital publications and recant his aggressive rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement added.
The representatives who appeared in the video also issued a declaration.
"We are ex-military personnel and national security professionals who value this nation and took an pledge to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they said. "This commitment is permanent, and we aim to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or incitement will stop us from that fundamental duty."
"The significant point is that the president views it punishable by capital punishment for us to restate the law," they continued. "Military personnel should know that we have their protection as they carry out their vow to the founding principles and responsibility to follow only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "All citizens must come together and condemn the former president's calls for our murder and political violence. This is a period for ethical certainty."
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's comments and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is calling for the execution of government members."
He added: "This is an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should condemn this right away and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have important representatives of the legislature instructing troops to defy commands, I think that is without precedent in US history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly stated to media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the crime of treason" but that "lawyers have to examine the language and decide all that."
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a media member, "Does the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary answered: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the representative declared. "We see active officials of the federal government who coordinated to organize a digital communication to members of the national defense, to serving soldiers advising them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She added: "The integrity of our armed forces depends on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can cause casualties, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
